My first, and only so far, encounter with my charge, General Lien Gnouy, was in the streets of New New York, where I caught a glimpse of him, tooling around in his '57 Chevy, mowing down those unfortunate and evil enough to impede his progress toward a normal and peaceful Earth. I knew from this moment that I had been assigned to protect his life and grant him the powers he required to accomplish these seemingly impossible means.
Unfortunately, before I could intervene, a shadow descended upon Gnouy's car and pulled him out into a dark alley. I flew after him, leaving the car to slow on its own, and discovered I had arrived too late.
Too late....
Maybe.
All that remained of the ensuing struggle was a dark blur on the pavement. The shadow? Gnouy? No, I realized, it could be neither, for whatever it was, it was too... powerful to be destroyed so easily. Even for Gnouy, whose death would have meant my own. All I knew was someone... or something... more powerful than either of us, was out to stop Lien Gnouy... no, was out to stop ME from saving him.
